Antwanette Serrano Visits the National English Honor Society Meeting
During the most recent meeting of the National English Honor Society, Mrs. Serrano, Newington Public School’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, spoke to the members about her journey to becoming a published author.  During her visit, students asked Mrs. Serrano questions about her writing journey. Additionally, many students in this organization had Mrs. Serrano as their teacher during their elementary school years. It was wonderful to see her connect with former students!

Blind Date with a Book
Sara Whalen shares that the grade 8 teachers at Martin Kellogg celebrated independent reading recently with an activity called "Blind Date with a Book." The activity was designed to promote independent reading and student voice. Each student decorated a paper bag with clues, reflections, and reviews of their current independent reading book, carefully hiding the title to build curiosity. Peers then browsed these “mystery” selections and chose a new book to explore, based solely on the clues provided.
This activity fostered authentic reading engagement, strengthened students’ ability to reflect on and advocate for texts, and built a classroom culture of literary curiosity and sharing. It’s a strong example of how our teachers are creating joyful and meaningful reading experiences aligned to student interests and identities.

JWMS Parent Equity Team
Dan Dias shares that on Tuesday, the John Wallace Parent Equity Team met to discuss the start of the school work and their goals for the school year. A reflective question was posed to them all, asking what a perfect JWMS would look like, sound like, and feel like both academically and within its school climate. The parents shared their personal reflections, and we asked them if they are seeing this now.
The responses were positive, with parents noting that they can see the work being accomplished at our school. One parent mentioned that she attended JWMS as a child and noted the significant improvements. She stated that students don't need to mask who they are here. Another parent appreciated that all students have the opportunity to see themselves in the reading, which was not their experience in school. They commended the work and expressed pride that their children come to our school.

CuriousO
Jessi Dalton, Library Media Specialist at JP, shared a new reading resource that might be a great fit for your classrooms — especially for multilingual learners, special education students, or reluctant readers who need engaging, supportive reading options.
CuriousO is similar to Epic! in that teachers can create their own class, students can join with a class code, and there’s a huge library of short, high-interest nonfiction texts. Each article includes colorful visuals, audio narration, and short quizzes to check for understanding.
 How CuriousO is different:
  • It focuses primarily on nonfiction and real-world topics designed to build background knowledge.
  • Texts are leveled and organized by reading skills and themes, not just reading level.
  • It includes built-in comprehension supports (like vocabulary help and guiding questions).
  • Teachers can track progress and assign specific articles tied to curriculum topics.

Julia Dennis shares story about ML Team impact on NHS Student

Aveen is a senior. She moved here from another country during her sophomore year. She didn't know anyone in the community. That year, I forced her to join FBLA and kept encouraging her to participate in different things. She ended up going to NYC, competing, and then she went to the National Leadership Conference with our group in Orlando. These experiences really helped her develop a group of friends she might not have had before. It helped her connect with others in different ways than the typical classroom. But Tom's (Mylar) support has been incredible in helping her develop the skills needed to feel comfortable addressing 300 people in an auditorium talking about her experience joining FBLA, while new to the country, and the importance of inclusivity. I'm so proud of Aveen but also can't say enough about the work that Tom and his tutors have done to get her to that point.
